EUREKA, Ill. – Fontbonne took advantage of four Eureka errors to score nine unearned runs in the fourth inning of Saturday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Red Devils, coasting to a 10-0 triumph over Eureka in eight innings.  The game was played on the campus of Eureka Middle School after the infield surface at Henry Sand Field was ruled unplayable due to inclement weather earlier in the week.

Brett Baldwin led off the fourth inning with an infield single, just the third hit of the afternoon allowed by Eureka freshman starting pitcher Bryan Meyer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap H.S.).  The Red Devils proceeded to commit errors on the next three Fontbonne at-bats, two of which came on sacrifice bunt attempts, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.  Three batters later, Matt Suda cracked an RBI double to center field to extend the lead before another Eureka error in the outfield allowed the Fontbonne lead to balloon to 5-0.  Baldwin collected his second hit of the inning with a two-run double to left-center field before Zack Will closed the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to right for a 9-0 advantage.  The Griffins sent 13 batters to the plate during the inning, collected only five hits and scored the last five runs with two outs.

The Griffins ended the game an inning early via the 10-run rule when Mick Ritter dumped an RBI single to right-center field to score Jason Nikolaisen with one out in the eighth inning.

Pitching with a large lead, Fontbonne starter Brad Schoenman threw 7.0 strong innings, allowing base hits to only Mike Daxenbichler (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.) and Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.).  He threw 83 pitches, 62 of which were strikes, while striking out seven and walking only one.  Levi Petzold threw 1.0 scoreless inning of relief.  Nikolaisen, Baldwin and Will combined to go 6-for-13 with four RBI and five runs scored to pace the Fontbonne attack.

Meyer allowed eight of the nine runs in Fontbonne's big fourth inning, but none of the runs were earned.  He yielded six hits in 3.2 innings and struck out two Griffins.  Freshman reliever Trevor Teal (Delavan, Ill./Delavan H.S.) gave the Red Devils 2.2 innings of work, pitching out of the jam in the fourth inning and allowing only one run.  Daxenbichler led the Eureka offense with a 2-for-4 showing out of the leadoff spot.

The three-game series will come to an end Sunday afternoon when the Red Devils host the Griffins in a noon doubleheader at Henry Sand Field.
