Cortland Routs RIT, 13-1, for 10th Straight Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Scott Hartling (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) and two relievers combined for a two-hitter as Cortland defeated visiting RIT, 13-1, in a non-league matchup. The nationally 20th-ranked Red Dragons, winners of their last 10 games, are now 18-5.
 
Hartling allowed one hit and no walks and struck out seven in six and a third scoreless innings for his second win of the season. Sophomore Tyler Scott (New Paltz) gave up one hit and a run in two innings. He struck out two and walked two. Sophomore A.J. Valentino (West Islip) retired both batters he faced, one by strikeout, to finish the ninth.
 
Junior Nick Thode (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and sophomore Zack Graczyk (Carmel) went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Justin Fredenburg (Saugerties), sophomore Bryan Mistretta (Commack) and freshman Adam Smith (Vestal) each drove in two runs.
 
Ed Hughes (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) doubled twice to account for both of RIT's base hits. His second double plated the lone run in the top of the seventh for the Tigers (7-10). Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) started for RIT and went five innings. He gave up 10 hits, but only two of the nine runs he allowed were earned. The Tigers committed five errors in the game, four of which led to a combined seven runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
 
Thode's two-run double gave Cortland a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Fredenburg singled in two runs in the fourth, and a five-run fifth inning featured a Thode RBI double and RBI singles by Smith and Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane).
 
Cortland added two in the seventh on a Mistretta two-run double and two in the eighth on a Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) RBI groundout and a Smith sacrifice fly.
 
The Red Dragons return to action on Wednesday, April 13, with a SUNYAC doubleheader at Oswego starting at noon.
