LOVES PARK, Ill. - It took 11 innings, but if the game meant getting the Edgewood College baseball team off their four-game losing streak and back on track, the Eagles would have played all night. Edgewood College scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning to salvage a wild 12-10 victory over Rockford College. The Regents took the first game of the doubleheader 9-7.

Edgewood College (8-12, 3-5 NAC) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Marc Ostrowski and Mitch Mogensen. The Regents bounced back with four in their half of the inning, setting the stage for a big fifth inning rally by the Eagles, highlighted by Ostrowski and Nate Ramsden. RBI singles by Treye Dennison and Mike Selvaggi tied the game, before Ramsden drove in two with a single through the left side. After Andrew King was hit by a pitch, Ostrowski crushed a two-run triple to right center field to give Edgewood College an 8-4 lead.

Rockford climbed back into the game scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit, thanks to three Edgewood College errors in the sixth. The Regents picked two more in the seventh to set a wild finish, tied at eight.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Rockford opened with back-to-back singles off Eagle pitcher Blake Hunt. Head coach Al Brisack went to closer Connor Lenz. Lenz fielded a sacrifice bunt for the first out and got Ryne Billesbach to foul out to King behind home plate. Lenz then struck out Jimmy Polster to send the game to extra innings.

Neither team scored in the 10th inning, although the Eagles put their first two batters on base. In the 11th the Eagles put runners on first and second with one out, setting the stage for Alex Jaskulski. The freshman first baseman put the Eagles ahead with a single up the middle, scoring King. Brandon Bartels then executed a perfect drag bunt down the third base line. Bartels was thrown out at first, but Ostrowski who was running with the pitch, turned the corner and scored all the way from second base. Dennison then singled home a third run, before Ryan Walker delivered an RBI triple to give the Eagles a 12-8 lead.

Lenz remained in the game for the bottom of the ninth and had two runners on with two outs. Billesbach smacked a double to left field to score two runs, but Lenz struck out pinch hitter Chris Thomas on a 2-1 pitch to end the game.

Dennison and Ramsden each went 4-for-6 to lead the hitting attack. Ostrowski went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Walker and Bartles each had two hits. Edgewood College recorded a season-high 19 hits in the game. Five Eagle pitchers worked the game, led off by starter Kyle Smith. Smith gave up three hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings. Lenz picked up his first victory of the year, pitching the final three innings.

In the opening game, Edgewood College rallied back from a 5-3 deficit to take a 7-5 lead at the seventh inning stretch. However, Rockford College (9-10, 5-3 NAC) rallied for two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to steal back the victory.

Selvaggi had the big bat in game one, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and his first home run of the season. Joe Gura stayed hot, going 2-for-4. Gura has four hits in his last eight at bats. Kyle Fischer also collected a pair of singles in four at bats. Blake O'Brien lasted into the seventh inning, striking out six batters. He gave up five earned runs on eight hits. Jason Towns came on in the eighth inning and surrendered two unearned runs to take the loss.

Edgewood College will travel to UW-Platteville on Tuesday for a non-conference game and then return home on Wednesday to face NCAA Division II member UW-Parkside. Both games are scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
