Keene State Owls Upend Westfield State Owls, 8-5

WESTFIELD, Mass. –Bobby Doyan had a double and three RBI and Erik Bergstrom contributed a home run and two RBI to lead Keene State College to an 8-5 victory over Westfield State University in non-conference baseball on Thursday, April 14.

Keene boosted its record to 17-6 while Westfield fell to 10-15.

Keene struck quickly, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning. Kyle Morrill, who was 3-for-4, led off with a bloop single to right field and scored on Doyon's double to center field.

Larry Longo, who was 2 for 5, rapped an RBI double and Bergstrom followed with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0. Smooth fielding shortstop Juan Bisono laced an RBI single through the right side for the final run in the first frame.

Keene increased its lead to 6-0 in the fourth on sacrifice flies from Matt Boulay and Doyon.

Westfield, which was held hitless through five complete innings, scored an unearned run in the fifth. Dale Crispin was hit by a pitch and Sean Geary – pinch running for Crispin - advanced to third on an infield throwing error on a Pete Hogan grounder. Geary was able to scamper home prior to a 1-3-6-5-6 double play that ended the inning.

Keene took a 7-1 lead in the sixth on Doyon's second sacrifice fly of the game. Westfield countered with two runs in the seventh to make it 7-3.

Matt Kelly opened the seventh with a walk and advanced to third on the Westfield's first hit of the game, a sharp single to right-center field by Alex Cloutier. Andrew Medeiros drove in Kelly on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. Josh Blair rolled a single up the middle to score Medeiros.

Keene scored its final run in the seventh on Bergstrom's solo homer over the left-center field fence.

Westfield threatened in the eighth by scoring two runs and loading the bases after the first two batters had recorded outs. Medeiros lined a solo home run over the left-center field fence. Three walks loaded the bases and a run scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-5. But relief pitcher Joe Katin got Sean Geary to foul out to first base to end the inning.

Keene outhit Westfield, 10-3. Kyle Underwood, the first of six Keene pitchers, threw the first five frames for the victory. Closer Corey Vogt pitched a strong ninth inning for the save.

Medeiros had two runs scored and two RBI.
