FROSTBURG, Md. - Down five runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcat bats came alive and scored in each of the next three innings to down St. Mary's (Md), 6-5, in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament to remain as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
The Seahawks (19-15) got out to an early lead scoring in the top of the third on a wild pitch. The visitors added two more in each of the fourth and fifth innings to lead the Bobcats 5-0 after five and a half. The Bobcats (20-10) came battling back and chipped away at the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, juniors John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) and Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) led off with back-to-back singles. Classmate Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) singled to left center to score Barrett and get the Bobcats on the board.
Freshman Matt Donaldson (Garrett, Pa./Meyersdale) walked and junior Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) singled to put two runners on. Senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) worked a 1-1 count and sent a ball over the left center fence to cut the Seahawk lead to 5-3.
The Bobcats weren't done yet and put two more runs up in the bottom of the eighth. Summerfelt led off getting hit by a pitch and got to third on two wild pitch. Junior Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) came up and doubled down the right field line to drive home Summerfelt and tie the game at five a piece. Boyd then advanced to third on a wild pitch to put the winning run 90 feet from home. Senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) picked up the game-winning RBI with a sac fly to right to bring around Boyd.
Senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) came out in the ninth inning and picked his second save in as many games. Quayle got the first two Seahawks he saw to strike out and after a two-out single, got the final batter to fly out to center to end the game.
Senior Dave Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholon) got the win for the Bobcats, coming out in relief of senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) in the bottom of the fifth. Lanier threw 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and struck out two.
Barrett led at the plate with three hits, while Greene had two hits, one run and three RBIs. Heatwole had two hits and the game-winning RBI.
The Bobcats continue in the CAC tournament when they face the winner of the No. 1 Salisbury/No. 3 St. Mary's (Md.) game that takes place at 9:00 am in Salisbury, Md. The Bobcats will play at 4:00 pm.
