Webster Takes Two From Eureka

More news about: Eureka

SAUGET, Ill. – Eureka College senior first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) hit his sixth career home run in the second game of the Red Devils' St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Webster, but the Gorloks broke out for 21 runs over the course of the afternoon to win two contests over Eureka at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.  Webster won game one, 12-0, and also claimed game two, 9-1 to sweep the weekend series from the Red Devils.

The first four batters reached base in the bottom of the first inning for the Gorloks (19-6, 12-2 SLIAC) in game one, igniting a six-run outburst for an early lead.  In addition to pounding out six hits during the frame, Webster took advantage of three hit batsmen, two walks and a Eureka error to send 11 batters to the plate.  Eureka (7-21, 3-13 SLIAC) starter John Berns (Herscher, Ill./Herscher H.S.) was able to get out of the jam with the bases loaded on an Anthony Genna flyout.

A Michael Aaron home run in the third inning stretched the Webster lead to 7-0 before the Gorloks put the game further out of reach in the fifth inning.  Cody Stevenson smashed a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by Nathan Shelton to move the hosts in front 10-0.  Aaron closed the scoring in game one with a two-run single in the sixth inning.

Webster starting pitcher Brandon Shaw earned the complete-game victory, scattering four Eureka singles and striking out 10 over 7.0 innings.  The first three batters in the Webster batting order -- Stevenson, Shelton and Genna -- combined to go 6-for-11 with four runs scored and six RBI.  Cashdollar and junior third baseman Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) collected two hits apiece to make up all of the Eureka offense.

The Gorloks opened up a 2-0 lead early in the nightcap behind an RBI single by Tom Henke and a sacrifice fly from Matt Crader.  Cashollar blasted a solo homer with one out in the top of the third inning to cut the Red Devils' deficit to 2-1, but Eureka wasn't able to push any more runs across for the remainder of the game.  The Gorloks scored runs in each of their six at-bats, including two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to stretch their lead to 9-1.

A single off the bat of freshman shortstop Grant DeWitt (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County H.S.) proved to be Eureka's only other hit of the contest against game two starting pitcher Chad Reando, who earned his first victory of the season after tossing 6.0 solid innings.  The Gorloks pounded out 12 more hits in the nightcap, including two each from Shelton, Henke, Craig Schaefer and Crader.  Additionally, Webster recorded 12 stolen bases in the nightcap.

The Red Devils will return to Henry Sand Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to host league foe MacMurray.  Eureka will be shooting for the season series sweep after taking both games of a doubleheader from Highlanders last Wednesday in Jacksonville, Ill.
