St. Louis, Mo., April 18, 2011 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team finished its four-game home stand with a 4-0 mark after sweeping a double header with Webster University on Monday afternoon at Irv Utz Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.

Senior Adam Merzel tossed his first complete game of the year as Washington University grabbed a 4-2 win in game one and just has he did in a win over Webster last Thursday, senior Brandon Rogalski delivered a game-winning two RBI-base hit to lift the Bears to a 5-4 win in the second game.

Merzel limited Webster to just seven hits over seven innings with six strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the year and lower his earned run average to 4.95.

Seniors Travis May and Ben Ingell powered the Bears' offense in game one, playing a role in three of Washington University's four runs. May led off the second inning with a double to left center field, and scored thanks to an Ingell base hit up the middle.

In the third inning May sent a base hit to left field, scoring Rogalski from second, and in the fifth it was once again Ingell driving in May with a base knock to center field.

May finished the game batting 2-for-2 with an RBI while Ingell was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Rogalski and freshman Kyle Billig also recorded multi-hit games for the Bears.

Washington University trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning in game two but strung together four runs over its next two at bats to come away with another win.

With two outs and senior Miguel Davis on first base, Webster starting pitcher Steve Dooley was called for balk when he failed to pause for a full second during his delivery, allowing Davis to advance to second. The mistake proved to be costly, with senior Matt Skinner sending a single out to center field to score Davis from second.

Webster did get that run back in the sixth thanks to an RBI base hit for catcher Dustin List, but the Bears used a crucial two out rally in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game.

After Dooley retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth, he hit WUSTL catcher David Madson and gave up a single to Ingell to put runners on first and second. A walk to Billig loaded the bases and signaled the end of the day for Dooley, with Jason Gray coming in to close out the game.

Gray issued a bases loaded walk to Davis to make the score 4-3 and bring Rogalski to the plate. With one strike Rogalski hit a slow rolling grounder straight down the third base line, which the Gorloks elected to let roll foul just before it reached the bag. Rogalski made the most of his second chance at the plate, lacing a base hit to straightaway centerfield, scoring Billig and Ingell and giving the Bears their first lead of the game.

Senior H.T. Flanagan, who recorded the final out for Washington U. in the sixth came in to close out the seventh and gave up just one hit while forcing three Webster groundouts to seal the victory. Senior David Liebman threw the first 5.2 innings for the Bears, giving up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts, receiving the no decision.

Washington U. (25-13) returns to action on Friday, April 22, for the start of a four-game slate with the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
