No. 14 Carthage Salvages a Series with No. 15 Augustana (Ill.) on April 18

The Carthage College baseball team (17-6, 9-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 14th in the April 12 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association /"D3baseball.com" poll, salvaged a three-game series with CCIW-opponent and No. 15 Augustana College (Ill., 19-6, 8-4 CCIW) on Monday, April 18 with a 13-0 win over the Vikings at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill. 

Carthage lost both ends of a Sunday, April 17 doubleheader to Augustana, 3-1 and 8-7, The series was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 16 but was postponed one full day due to wet grounds.  The win left the Red Men in first place in the CCIW, one-half game ahead of both Illinois Wesleyan University and North Central College 8-3.  The latter also plays a Monday game, taking on Elmhurst College.

The Red Men took out their frustrations on the Vikings with two big innings.  Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a bunt-single RBI by Tyler Eickmeyer.  The Red Men broke the game open with a five-run third inning.  After scoring two unearned runs, Matt Soderlund doubled in a pair, and Eickmeyer followed with an RBI-single.  Carthage scored five times in the fifth to up its lead to 11-0.  Zach Kozlowski walked with the bases loaded.  With the bases still loaded, Billy Herrin reach on catcher's interference, allowing Soderlund to score from third.  Mike Petti followed with a two-run double, and John Hasser delivered an RBI-single.  Kyle Pusateri's two-run double in the seventh closed out the scoring at 13-0, as the game was halted due to a 10-run rule.

Carthage collected 16 hits off three Augustana hurlers.  Matt Soderlund (Sr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) went three-for-four with a double and two RBI.  Kyle Pusateri (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill.) went three-for-five with a double and two RBI, and John Hasser had three hits in five trips with a double and an RBI.  Red Men starting pitcher Eric Rohe (Jr., Mundelein, Ill.) twirled a five-hit shutout  to improve his record to 4-0, he dropped his earned run average 2.39.  Ben Heaton (3-2), the Vikings starter, took the loss, with Rick Erickson taking over in the third inning and Luke Lowery in the fifth. 

Carthage plays host to non-conference opponent Lakeland College (8-14) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20 at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
