Pomona, N.J. (4/18/11) – Senior Chris Cirlincione improved to 4-0 as he helped the Kean University baseball team to a 6-4 victory over host Richard Stockton College in a makeup NJAC contest on Monday afternoon.
The teams were slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday but inclement weather forced the postponement of game two on Saturday and poor field conditions on Sunday pushed the single game one day more to this afternoon. Kean defeated Stockton on Saturday by the final of 6-1.
Junior Dylan Laguna led the Cougars (26-4, 9-1 NJAC) with a 2-for-3 day including an RBI. Chris Wedding led the Ospreys as he was 3-for-4 with three RBI as Stockton fell to 16-12 overall, 2-8 NJAC.
#3 Kean jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat as rookie Shane Alvarez and senior Chris Carrano both reached on singles. Junior Lee Cavico moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt and senior Ken Gregory delivered a key double down the line for the 2-0 lead. Two batters later, senior Nick Nolan recorded an RBI groundout for the 3-0 advantage.
Both teams traded singles runs between the third and fourth before Kean took a 5-1 lead in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Laguna, scoring Cavico who reached on a leadoff single. Stockton then closed the gap with a three run eighth inning to close within 5-4. The Ospreys recorded three hits and took advantage of a Kean balk and error. The Cougars added an insurance run in the ninth as pinch-runner Joe O'Connor scored on a miscue by the Ospreys.
Cirlincione (4-0) tossed five innings allowing just one run and three hits while fanning two and walking no one. Sophomore Kevin Herget earned his second save of the season. Herget tossed four innings allowing three runs, two earned, and five hits.
The Cougars return to NJAC action on Thursday when they travel to Rowan University.
