VERONA, Wis. - Starting pitchers Blake O'Brien and Glenn Nowell held the Dominican University offense at arm's length as the Edgewood College baseball team earned their first Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep of the season. The Eagles beat the Stars twice, both by scores of 5-3, to pull back to .500 in league play.

Edgewood College (11-15, 6-6 NAC) got off to a fast start in game one. The Eagles put up four runs in the first inning on a bases loaded walk issued to Alex Jaskulski a two-run single from Scott Ortega and an RBI single by Andrew King. The Stars would answer with two of their own in the third. In the fifth inning, Edgewood College manufactured another run. Jake Zadra singled and stole second base. He moved to third on Mike Selvaggi's base hit. Jaskulski then laid down a safety squeeze bunt, allowing Zadra to slide home before the return throw from first base arrived.

O'Brien stayed out of trouble most of the night, but got a big assist from his middle infielders in the fifth and sixth innings. Ortega and Eric Curtis turned double plays in back-to-back innings to cut short a Dominican comeback. O'Brien finished with two earned runs allowed on seven hits and nine strikeouts in eight innings pitched.

Connor Lenz entered in the ninth inning and, despite walking one batter, earned his fifth save of the season, breaking the Edgewood College single season record. His fifth save also ties the career record held by Bill Dictus (2005-08), Derek Jew (2004-05) and Matt Hill (1999-2002).

Ryan Walker and Jake Zadra each went 2-for-4 to lead the team in hitting. Jaskulski and Ortega each had a pair of runs batted in.

In game two, it was Dominican University (7-20, 4-7 NAC) who grabbed the early advantage. The Stars scored on an RBI single by Chris Kemp and a botched attempt to catch Kemp stealing which allowed Chris Anderson to score from third. The Eagles cut the Stars' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Zadra drove home Treye Dennison who had walked and stole second.

It was 3-1 in the fifth when Edgewood College made their move. Walker drove home Dennison to chase Dominican starting pitcher Jesse Bongartz from the game. The Eagles then recorded back-to-back run scoring hits, first an RBI double by Selvaggi and then a two-run single for Jaskulski, to take a 5-3 advantage.

Nowell would make the lead hold up, going all nine innings, throwing 87 strikes in 128 pitches. He struck out nine and didn't walk a batter, although he hit five Stars with pitches. Nowell gave up just one earned run to pick up his second win of the year.

Zadra extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games, by going 3-for-4. His .422 batting average would rank comfortably among the top 10 in the Northern Athletics Conference, but he is currently one at-bat short of qualifying for the league leaders list. Walker, Jaskulski and Ortega each had two hits. Jaskuski had two RBIs, giving him four on the night.

On Wednesday, Edgewood College will travel to UW-Whitewater, currently ranked 10th in the country by D3Baseball.com with a new poll being released on Tuesday. The Eagles and Warhawks will play a doubleheader, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
