18th-Ranked Saints Falls Twice to Grove City

(STRUTHERS, Ohio) - The 18th-ranked Thomas More College baseball team fell twice to Grove City College today (Thursday, April 21, 2011) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Bob Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio.  Grove City won game one, 9-7, and the nightcap, 8-5.

With the two losses, the Saints fall to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in the PAC.  With the two wins, the Wolverines improve to 16-13 overall and 11-6 in the PAC.

In game one, Grove City scored one in the first, four in the second and four in the fifth and held Thomas More to one in the first, three in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Offensively, the Saints were led by sophomore shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), who was three-for-three with a double, a run batted-in and three runs scored.  Two other Saints had multiple hits in the game as senior third baseman Sam Schmeltzer (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) was two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored and sophomore center fielder Brandon Nutini (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-four with a run scored.

On the mound, sophomore Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) suffered the loss as he pitched two and two-third innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out three.

In the nightcap, Grove City scored three in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, while Thomas More scored five in the fifth.

The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic), who was two-for-four with a double, a RBI and a run scored and junior catcher Andrew Clements (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas), who was one-for-one with a double and three RBI.

Freshman Jake Samad (Burlington, Ky./Conner) took the loss on the mound as he went four innings giving up six runs (all earned) on eight hits and struck out three.

The Saints' three-game series with Geneva College that was scheduled for Friday and Saturday (April 22-23) has been postponed with no make-up dates announced.   As of right now, the Saints' next game will be on Tuesday (April 26) when they host Capital University in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
