SALISBURY, Md. -- In the final road game of the regular season, top-ranked Christopher Newport University (37-5) was nipped by host Salisbury University (22-11), 3-2, to earn a season split of the series. The Sea Gulls held the Captains to just two runs on four hits and halted an eight-game winning streak for CNU.

Neither offense was in top form on Friday, as the two teams combined for just eight hits. Salisbury starter Chris Greiner tossed eight innings of three-hit ball, striking out ten Captains in the process.

The Sea Gulls got him two runs of support in the third inning on an RBI double from outfielder Devon Quaglietta, who then came around to score when he stole home two batters later.

The Captains would cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh when Steven Keener led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on an error with two outs. Tyler Bennett answered for Salisbury in the bottom half, knocking out a one-out solo homer to get the lead back to two, 3-1.

CNU would score in the top of the ninth in a last-ditch comeback attempt. Second baseman Matt Shoemaker led off with a double and moved up to third on a groundout to the right side. Rookie Billy Steel scored Shoemaker with a sacrifice fly, but Drew Baldwin would lock up the save getting the next batter to ground out.

Baldwin and Greiner combined to through a four-hitter for Salisbury, allowing just one earned run. CNU starter Greg Goldsmith was solid, allowing just four hits in seven innings of work. Sophomore Matt Verdillo also tossed a clean inning in relief for the Captains, but it wasn't enough as the offense never came around.

The Captains return to action tomorrow for the regular season finale, a home doubleheader against York College (Pa.) in what will also be senior day. The first game starts at Noon; be sure to get to the field early for a special senior presentation honoring four Captains playing in the final home game of their career.
