O'Brien makes sure Edgewood College gets split with Warriors

VERONA, Wis. -Edgewood College extended their Northern Athletics Conference winning streak to six games with a 6-3 victory in the first game of their doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College. However, the Eagles became their own worst enemy with seven errors to drop the closing game 10-7. With the split, the Eagles were unable to gain ground on the leaders for a coveted NAC Tournament berth.

Blake O'Brien proved to be dominant force on the mound, pitching to a complete game victory. O'Brien gave up just six hits and half of them came in a two-run Wisconsin Lutheran first inning. After the first, O'Brien was almost unhittable, striking out eight batters and giving up just one unearned run in the eighth inning. He threw 79 strikes in 123 pitches for his third victory of the season.

Edgewood College (14-18, 9-7 NAC) scored a pair of runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Ryan O'Dell drove in runs with a pair of RBI doubles in back-to-back innings. Jake Zadra, Scott Ortega and Treye Dennison also added RBI singles. Those four Eagles accounted for all eight Edgewood College hits as each had two hits apiece.

At times, parts of the second game more accurately resembled a three-ring circus as the two teams combined for 15 errors in the game. Edgewood College committed six errors in the first four innings, which allowed Wisconsin Lutheran (17-14, 8-6 NAC) to open up a 10-2 lead.

Still, the Eagles got a pair of RBI groundouts in the fourth and scored an error and an Eric Curtis sacrifice fly in the sixth to trim the lead to 10-6. Zadra singled home Dennison in the seventh to get Edgewood College within three runs, but despite a leadoff single from Curtis to open the ninth, the Eagles couldn't get the tying run up to the plate.

Zadra went 2-for-5 in the second game to extend is career-best hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. Zadra has a hit in every game he's played since the beginning of April. Ortega also had two hits in the game. A bright spot for the Eagles was the relief work of Jason Towns. Towns entered in a the chaotic five-run, Warrior fourth inning. He gave up only two hits in his six innings of work, and kept the Wisconsin Lutheran from doing further damage.

Edgewood College will get the middle of the week off as they prepare for a home doubleheader against Maranatha Baptist on Friday and a trip to Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday. On Friday, the Eagles will honor their senior class with on LSM Chiropractic Senior Day.
