Danbury, Conn. — The ninth inning was the only one in which the visiting Trinity College Bantam baseball team failed to score as they pounded the Western Connecticut State University Colonials by a College-record-setting final score of 28-2 at Westside Field this evening. Trinity moves its overall record to 16-14 with its second victory in a row, while Western Connecticut falls to 15-15.  The Bantams broke an 11-year-old record with 28 runs, shattering the old mark of 27 runs achieved in 2000 against Salve Regina University.

Sophomore Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) and senior Mark Young (Chester, N.J.) hit back to back singles to start the game for Trinity , and later scored to give the Bantams a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first inning.  Sophomore Starter James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass) set the Western Connecticut batters down in order in the bottom of the first, one of four innings in which the Colonials would only send three batters to the plate, and Trinity's lead was 2-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, Trinity exploded for seven runs on six hits, one hit batsman, and one Western Connecticut error, and the rout was on as Colonial starter Justin Schultz (Ridgefield, N.J.) was pulled after giving up a total of seven runs (six earned) while only retiring one Trinity batter.  Freshman Bobby Coyne (Clinton, N.J.) relieved Schultz in the bottom of the second, giving up an RBI single before getting the final two outs of the inning.  In the bottom of the second, sophomore Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, Conn.) and sophomore Bill Eannotti (Shelton, Conn.) had back to back singles through the left side of the Trinity infield to put runners on first and second with no outs.  After junior Zach Dandrea (Wanaque, N.J.) struck out swinging, junior Tim Nelson (Manchester, Conn.) hit a double down the right field line that scored Bierfeldt and moved Eannotti to third.  Junior Cody Sestito (Bethel, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Eannotti, for the final WestConn run of the night.

Trinity pushed across lone runs in both the third and fourth innings, but then added three more in the top of the fifth to chase Coyne from the mound before leaving three men on base to end the inning.  Nine Trinity batters came to the plate again in the sixth, but this time the Bantams scored five runs (four earned) on only three hits.  In the seventh, 12 batters scored seven runs on eight hits and walk, before the inning ended on a pup-up to second with two runners in scoring position.  After six and one half innings, the Trinity lead as a comfortable 26-2.  Two more Trinity runs scored in the eighth, before freshman Jake Lisowski (Foxborough, Mass.) came on to start the ninth for WestConn and retired each of the three batters he faced.  WestConn managed to get two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but three Colonials batters struck out swinging to make the final margin 28-2.
For the game, Trinity finished with 31 hits and four walks off seven different Western Connecticut pitchers, while the Colonial defense committed six errors.
