FREDONIA, N.Y. – Finally with spring-like weather to play in, the Allegheny baseball team resumed their 2011 regular season on Thursday afternoon with a dominating 11-2 win over Fredonia State on the road. In the nine-inning contest, all nine batters in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit as the Gators (14-14, 5-6 NCAC) pounded out 13 hits, while only allowing two hits from the Blue Devils (14-18).
Possessing a potent lineup all season long, the Gators wasted no time in getting the lineup going against the Blue Devils. A two-run bomb to left field in the top of the first by junior catcher Ben Lowmaster plated the game's first runs. Allegheny starting pitcher Mike Pereslucha would go out on the bump and pitch a perfect bottom of the first.
The next half inning, with one out on the first batter, the Gators would have six of the next seven batters reach base safely, five of which would hit their way on base. Lowmaster and Pereslucha, along with rookie Jon Boyd, would double in the five-run inning.
Fredonia's only two runs in the game would come in the bottom of the third. Already down 7-0, the Blue Devils capitalized on a bit of a wild spell from Pereslucha as he walked the bases loaded to begin the inning. A two-run single, the only hit allowed by Pereslucha, off the bat of leadoff hitter Jon Messina produced the two runs. The Blue Devils looked to be threatening for more as a Pereslucha wild pitch put two runners in scoring position at second and third with nobody out. As he has done numerous times this year, Pereslucha worked his way out of the self-induced jam. He struck out the next two batters, and got a harmless groundball to Boyd at short to end the inning.
That third inning rally would be the last time that the Blue Devils would come close to touching Pereslucha. Over the next three innings, Pereslucha would not allow a single base runner, and racked up five of his 11 strikeouts in the game; matching his season-high for K's that he set back in his first start of the year. Peresulcha would toss six complete innings to pick up the win, the fifth of the season.
Relieving Perelsucha on the mound for the remainder of the game was rookie right-hander Kyle Davis. In his three full innings of relief, Davis would surrender just one hit, walked two, and picked up a strikeout.
Lowmaster would collect four RBI on his 3-for-5 day at the plate, highlighted by his two-run shot in the top of the first. The Gators, offensively, were book-ended by two-run homeruns as senior Zack Nichols would also go deep with a two-run shot in the top of the ninth.
Next up for the Gators is a meeting with Division I Youngstown State University at YSU on Tuesday, May 3rd. The game is slated to be played under the lights with first pitch coming at 6:00 p.m.
