VERONA, Wis. - Senior day is often a milestone moment for collegiate student-athletes, but on Friday night, the Edgewood College baseball team set a couple milestones of their own. More importantly, the Eagles swept Maranatha Baptist 8-5 and 7-0 in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader to move, for now, into fifth place in the league standings.

In the first game, senior Treye Dennison turned the base paths at Stampfl Field into his own personal running track. Dennison stole five bases, including two straight steals of home plate to set a new Edgewood College single-game record. In the first inning, Dennison singled and reached third base with one out. When Maranatha Baptist pitcher Derek Funkhouser went into a windup, Dennison broke for home. He scored with a headfirst slide into the feet of teammate Mike Selvaggi before the Crusader catcher could apply the tag.

In the eighth inning, Dennison very literally stole a run. After walking to lead off the inning, he stole second and third bases in succession. Then with Ethan Anderson at the plate, Dennison got a jump as Maranatha Baptist catcher Andrew Timblin returned the ball to the pitcher. He slid in safely before Timblin could get the ball back in his hands. In all, the Eagles swiped 11 bases in the game, just one short of the Eagles' single game team record.

Fellow senior Mitch Mogensen also made his senior day memorable with a 3-for-5 hitting performance, including three runs batted in. Selvaggi was the only other Eagle with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 and Jake Zadra had a first inning double to extend his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games, tied for the fifth longest in school history.

Three seniors went the distance on the mound for Edgewood College with Kyle Lode throwing 7.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing just three earned runs to claim the win. Zach Gura closed out the eighth, before Blake Hunt came on in the ninth to get the Eagles out of a bases loaded jam to earn his first save of the season.

However, Lode will be the footnote in a more dubious milestone for the Edgewood College pitching staff. When Lode plunked the Crusaders' David Swanson in the fourth inning, it marked the 70th batter hit by Edgewood College pitchers this season, breaking the NCAA Division III record of 69 set by Millikin University in 2008.

While game one belonged to the seniors, freshman Taylor Hillmann dominated from the mound in game two. Hillmann went seven innings and baffled Maranatha Baptist (1-19, 0-18 NAC) hitters, holding them to just two hits, both singles for seven innings. Hillmann earned his first career win, striking out seven Crusaders. Seniors Kyle Smith and James Bertakis finished up the game for Hillmann.

Another freshman Will Schlosser was one of the Eagles' top hitters, going 3-for-5 including his first career double in the third inning. Joe Gura went 3-for-3 and reached base in all four plate appearances. Freshman Jared Raupp had the first two hits of his collegiate career, while Ryan Walker also chipped in a pair of hits.

Edgewood College sits in fifth place, one position on the outside of the NAC Tournament looking in, with four conference games left to play. Edgewood College will travel to Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon tomorrow for a crucial doubleheader. With many of the top teams facing off this weekend, the Eagles could move up to fourth place with a sweep of the Falcons.
