WESTFIELD – Westfield State University rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Curry College, 8-5, in a non-conference baseball game Sunday, May 1.
Westfield evens its record at 19-19; Curry is 17-22.
Curry jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and a run in the second. Westfield cut the lead in half by scoring twice in the home half of the second on an RBI double by Pete Hogan and an RBI groundout by Kevin Greene.
The Owls scored another run in the third to make it 4-3. Josh Blair doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Tim Heintz's sacrifice fly.
Westfield took the lead for good with a three-run uprising in the fourth. Greene tied the score with an RBI single and two more runs scored on an infield throwing error.
Curry closed within a run, 6-5, in the fifth, scoring an unearned run on a Matt Rodriguez's RBI single. The Owls tacked on two insurance in the seventh, including an RBI single by Dale Crispin.
The Owls out-hit the Colonels, 11-10. Blair laced a double and single and Andrew Medeiros and Jeff Ackerman were both 2 for 4.
Brad Hawn (3 for 5, RBI) and Matt Drew (2 for 3) collected half of Curry's hits.
Sean Keane, one of seven Westfield pitchers, was credited with the pitching victory. Nick Noblit struck out two in the ninth inning to earn the save. Owl hurlers combined for eight strikeouts and issued only one walk. Kevin Zyrkowski fanned four in two complete innings.
