Carthage Sweeps Marian (Wis.) on May 2

The Carthage College baseball team (23-8, 13-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 22nd in the April 26 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association /"D3baseball.com" poll and second in the April 28 NCAA Division III Central Region poll, swept a Monday, May 2 doubleheader from Marian University (Wis., 13-18), 9-1 and 9-0, at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The Red Men had not played a non-conference game since defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 6-1, on March 19 in North Port, Fla. 

Carthage took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opening game on a two-run double by Will Hodges.  Marian scored a run in the second, and the score stayed 2-1 until the fifth when the Red Men scored seven times to make it 9-1.  Joey Aiello doubled in the first run in the fifth.  Hodges followed with a sacrifice fly, Josh Albers an RBI-double, and Zach Kozlowski, John Hasser and Kyle Pusateri each hit RBI-singles.  Hasser scored on a wild pitch to score the final run.  Matt Martinski (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove, 3-1) was the winning pitcher.  He allowed one run on four hits and a walk over five innings.  Mitch Lochen worked the final two innings.  Jake Schaffhauser (0-1), the first-of-four Sabre hurlers, took the loss.  Will Hodges (Sr., Oak Park, Ill./Naperville-North) went two-for-two with a double and three RBI, while Joey Aiello went two-for-four with a double and an RBI.

The Red Men took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by Will Hodges.  An RBI-grounder by Joey Aiello in the third made it 2-0, and the junior first baseman drove in another run with a single in the fifth to up the lead to 3-0.  The Red Men went up, 5-0, in the sixth on a two-run single by Tyler Eickmeyer.  Carthage increased its led to 7-0 in the seventh on an RBI-single by Brian Huntsinger and a run-scoring grounder by Zack Kozlowski.  The Red Men closed out the scoring with two runs in the eighth.  With the bases loaded and one out, Josh Albers reached on a fielding error by Sabres shortstop Ryan Seifert, scoring Eric Barber from third and advancing Chris Tydd from second to third.  Kyle Pusateri followed with a sacrifice fly to score Tydd for the final, 9-0 margin.

Nic Jensen (Sr., Appleton, Wis./East, 3-1) was the winning pitcher.  The lefty blanked Marian on four hits and a walk over eight innings, while striking out six batters.  Alex Newberry mopped up in the ninth.  Adam Diedrich (1-2), the first-of-three Marian pitchers, took the loss.  Tyler Eickmeyer (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Somers-Shoreland Lutheran) was two-for-two with two RBI, and Mike Petti (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) went two-for-three.

Carthage was scheduled to travel to West Bend, Wis., on Wednesday, May 4 to Concordia University (Wis., 14-17) at Regner Field.  That game has been moved up one day to Tuesday, May 3 and moved to the on-campus Concordia field, due to a ground-breaking ceremony for the Concordia's new baseball facility, Falcon Field.  Tuesday's game gets underway at 3 p.m.  On Thursday, May 5, Carthage plays host to Lakeland College (14-18) in a 3 p.m. twinbill that was postponed on April 20.  Next weekend's North Park University series gets underway with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday, May 7 in Kenosha, Wis., followed by a single game on Sunday, May 8 at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago, beginning at 1 p.m.
