WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Frostburg State baseball team took a pair of games from Washington & Jefferson this evening, winning the first game 3-1 behind yet another stellar outing from senior Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the night cap.
Ross had his second 11 and fifth double-digit strike out game of the season as he led the Bobcats (27-11) to a 3-1 win over the Presidents in the opening game. Ross did not get the win without help, though. Both teams were held scoreless going into the fourth. With one out, senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) sent a ball over the right field fence to give FSU a 1-0 lead. One batter and out later, junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) hit an infield single to keep the inning alive. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) hit the second home run of the inning, a two-run shot, down the right field line to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead, which proved to be enough.
The Presidents (18-16) got one run back in the sixth but could not mount a comeback over the Bobcats. Andy Tretter hit the first extra base hit off of Ross in his last four appearances with a double down the left field line to score Joe Bogdewiecz, who reached a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Presidents were threatening with a runner on third, but Ross got the last batter to line out to Greene at second base and hand the Bobcats a 3-1 win.
Ross went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits and just one run and one walk. Ross' 11 strikeouts brings him within one of tying the school record of strikeouts in a season that currently sits at 103.
The Presidents jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning of the second game with an RBI fielder's choice from Trettel that brought home Bogdewiecz. The lead wouldn't last long, however, when the Bobcats put up two runs in the top of the second.
Anuszewski singled up the middle and Ridenour walked to put two runners on. With two outs, junior Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a base-clearing double to right center to give the lead to FSU.
Frostburg Stated added a little insurance for its starting pitcher, senior Josh Davis (Freeland, Md./Hereford (Webber International)). With the bases full of Bobcats in the top of the fifth, Anuszewski was hit by a pitch to score freshman Matt Donaldson (Meyersdale, Pa./Garrett), who led off the inning getting hit.
The Presidents got one back in the home half of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Bogdewiecz scored on a Bobcat error after getting on base with a two-out single.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Presidents were set to score with two outs but Davis got Aaron Klinec to ground out to second and end the inning.
Senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) came out in relief of Davis in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game for the Bobcats. Quayle got two quick outs before giving up a walk but got Brian Szabo to foul out to first and give the Bobcats a 3-2 win.
Davis earned the win for FSU throwing six innings, scattering six hits and two runs, one earned on four walks while fanning two. Quayle earned his fifth save of the season, moving him into a tie for the both the school's single-season and career record of saves. Quayle now has seven in his short time in a Bobcat uniform.
The Bobcats look to extend their six-game winning streak when they host former Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, Mount Aloysius tomorrow at Bob Wells Field. The doubleheader is slated to start at 2:00 pm.
