BALTIMORE, Md. – After falling in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament two weeks ago, the Salisbury University baseball team has been on a tear through some of the top teams in the region.

On Thursday afternoon, the Gulls (26-11) picked up another impressive win topping Johns Hopkins University on the road, 9-5, claiming their fifth-straight victory.

Salisbury came out strong, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman Bill Root opened the game with a single to left field and after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, scored on senior Brian Green's double. Green scored on a hit by junior Tyler Bennett and Bennett scored the final run of the inning on a single from junior Nick Walls.

The Blue Jays (25-12) came right back with four runs in the home half of the first inning off Salisbury starting pitcher Chris Greiner. The senior settled in after the first, allowing just one more run as he worked 5 2/3 innings on the day, striking out five.

Salisbury tied the game in the top of the sixth inning on solo home run by senior Devon Quaglietta. But the Blue Jays would respond in the home half of the inning, scoring the final run off Greiner before he was relieved by sophomore Andrew Levy.

But the Salisbury bats were not done. The Gulls were able to push home three runs in the eighth, including Quaglietta's second home run of the game, and two more in the ninth while reliever Drew Baldwin did not allow Hopkins to respond.

The senior allowed just two hits and struck out one in 2 1/3 shutout innings to close out the game and pick up his third victory of the season.

Root and junior Chris Connor each went 3-for-5 while Bennett had a pair of hits and drove in three runs.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Friday afternoon at the SU Baseball Field, hosting the College of Staten Island in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Salisbury will play its final regular-season game on Thursday, May 12, hosting Montclair State University.
