No. 1 Etta Express sweeps La Roche to improve to 35-3

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — No. 1 Marietta College stretched its win streak to 11 games with an 8-3 and 7-2 doubleheader sweep at La Roche College Saturday (May 7) afternoon. [Game 1 Box Score] [Game 2 Box Score]

The Pioneers improved their record to a nation's best 35-3. The Redhawks fell to 25-12 with three of their losses coming against Marietta.

Senior Casey Levens (Dayton/Centerville) worked six strong innings to earn the win and improve to 4-0 in game one. Levens scattered three runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out four. Junior closer Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) worked a scoreless seventh to seal the victory.

Senior John Snyder (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) paced Marietta's offense with two of the team's eight hits. Sophomore Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) added a home run, his third of the spring, and two RBI, while Levens helped his own cause with a big two-run single.

The Etta Express struck for four runs in the top of the second. Hopper launched a one-out solo home run to left. Levens then walked and later scored on a balk. Brockmeier added a double and crossed the plate on an Alex Toth (Painesville/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) ground out. Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont) then doubled home Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon), who also walked in the frame.

La Roche got on the board with an unearned run in both the third and fourth innings. Marietta boosted its lead to 6-2 in the fifth when Snyder tripled and scored on a single from Tim Saunders (Alliance/Alliance). Saunders then stole second and third before scoring on a Hopper sacrifice fly.

The Redhawks scraped across their third run in the bottom of the fifth. Levens capped the scoring with his two-run double after Snyder doubled and Saunders walked in front of him.

Sophomore Michael Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./North Catholic) made his first start of the spring and threw five stellar innings to earn the win in game two. Mulvey (1-0) allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits, walked two and struck out five. Sophomore Logan Lewis (Nashport/Tri-Valley) struck out two more while closing the game with two scoreless innings.

The Etta Express finished with 10 hits. Grilliot led the way with three hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBI. Snyder matched his game-one output with two more hits, while Hopper added a pair, including a double.

Snyder got Marietta on the board with a RBI single in the first. Grilliot, who led off the game with a double, scored on the play. La Roche tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. The Pioneers regained the lead for good when Snyder delivered a sacrifice fly in the third.

The Etta Express extended its advantage to 5-1 when Grilliot drilled a three-run home run over the right field fence in the fourth. Hopper then doubled home a run and sophomore Cort Thomas (Strongsville/Strongsville) singled home another in the fifth. The Redhawks capped the scoring with a single run in their half of the fifth.

Marietta is still attempting to add a non-conference game Monday (May 9) but no details have been finalized yet.
