More news about: Christopher Newport | Webster

MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- After nearly a month off from baseball, the No. 2-ranked and top-seeded Christopher Newport University Captains (39-6) showed a little rust on Wednesday, as they fell to Webster University (32-11) in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA South Regional, 11-1. Zach Schneider pitched a complete game against the Captains and CNU mustered just five hits agianst the Gorloks.

CNU will advance to play in an elimination game on Thursday at Noon, central, 1:00 pm eastern. The Captains will take on either No. 2 Shenandoah or No. 5 Wabash, whichever loses in today's second game.

Schneider held CNU without a base runner for the first 5.1 innings of the game before rookie shortstop Billy Steel finally stopped the no-hitter with a looper into right field. Connor Madden followed with a single up the middle, but the Captains were held off the board.

Meanwhile, the speedy offense of Webster was getting to the Captains pitching staff. The Gorlocks had eight stolen bases in the game and plated runners in six different innings. Senior ace Sean Chitsaz went five innings and gave up just three earned, but a pair of costly errors led to three more runs.

CNU finally got on the board in the eighth inning, when Chris McDougal led off with a single and Ben Lenda reached on a hit-by-pitch. After a double play, McDougal was on third base for Madden, who blasted a two-out run-scoring triple to right center field. The junior left fielder finished the day 2-for-3 with the lone RBI for CNU.

Schneider ended the threat with a strikeout and came back on in the ninth to close it out. After a leadoff single by Shannon Mark, the rookie left-hander for the Gorloks retired the next three for the win. Webster will advance to play in Thursday's second game against the loser of today's third game, featuring No. 3 Piedmont and No. 4 Salisbury.

Tomorrow's elimination game will be chronicled through live video, live stats and CNU Athletics will also provide live Twitter updates throughout the contest. First pitch is set for Noon, central.
