Baseball Opens Season with 7-3 Win Over Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mississippi College baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 7-3 win over Huntingdon College on Friday afternoon at Posey Field.

Junior shortstop Josh Perez led the Choctaw offense with three hits and a run scored.  Senior designated hitter Mike Kerdock went 2-3 with a run scored.

Senior Ian Underwood (1-0) shut the Hawks out over the final six innings to pick the victory.  The Pascagoula native struck out five and allowed just four hits.

The Choctaws had their first four hitters of the game record singles, and the first three scored as MC took a 3-0 lead after one inning.

After the two teams traded runs, the Hawks cut the lead to 4-3 in the third inning on the strength of an RBI triple by Evan Agnew and run-scoring single by Keegan Lambeth.

MC put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with a three-run frame.  Junior Pate Shackelford and senior Daniel Wass each had RBI singles, while senior Chad Wooten drove in a run with a squeeze play that scored Kerdock.

Trey Smith, Caleb Astin, and Grant Brown each finished the game with two hits for Huntingdon.

John Rice (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up six hits and three earned runs over 4.0 innings.

The Choctaws will finish the two-game series with Huntingdon on Saturday when they two teams play at 1:00 p.m.
