Choctaws Drop Two at Huntingdon on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mississippi College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Huntingdon and Rhodes at Posey Field.

The Choctaws (1-3) allowed three runs in the ninth to fall to Huntingdon, 4-3.  In the second game, MC made six errors as Rhodes took advantage for a 7-3 victory.

MC got on the board first against the Hawks with back-to-back RBI doubles by juniors Brett Hightower and Pate Shackelford to take a 2-0 lead.  An error in the seventh allowed the Choctaws to take a 3-0 lead.

Junior Beau Underwood had an outstanding outing for MC, pitching 5.0 hitless innings to start the game.  Underwood walked five and struck out three batters.

The Hawks got a run back in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice by Joseph Odom after three straight one-out singles.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Hawks cut the lead to 3-2 on a wild pitch by sophomore Tyler Womack.  Odom won the game with a two-run single that scored Caleb Astin and Grant Brown.

Hightower led the Choctaws with three hits and an RBI, while Shackelford and senior Spencer Brunson each had two hits.

Womack (0-1) took the loss for MC, while Joseph Fincher (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win for the Hawks.

In the second game, Rhodes got on the board first with an RBI single by Walker McWherter that scored Lynden Pindling, who reached on MC's first error of the game.

The Choctaws grabbed the lead in the second inning on RBI singles by senior Mike Kerdock and Hightower.  Lynx pitcher Austin Carden struck out the side to end the inning and the threat.

Rhodes scored four runs on four hits and three MC errors in the third inning.  Matt Killary highlighted the inning with a two-run single.  All four runs were unearned in the frame.

Junior Kenneth Atwood took the tough-luck loss for the Choctaws, allowing seven hits and six unearned runs over 6.0 innings.  Atwood also had five strikeouts and no walks.

After Rhodes added another unearned run in the fourth, the Choctaws answered with a run of their own in the frame on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Zach Evans that scored Kerdock.

Both pitching staffs settled down with three straight scoreless innings before the Lynx added the last run in the eighth inning.

Senior Ian Underwood pitched the final three innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.  Carden picked up the victory for the Lynx, striking out nine over 6.0 innings.

Kerdock had two of the Choctaws' three hits in the game.

MC will play their next game at Belhaven on Tuesday night at 4:00 p.m.
