HILO, Hawaii – A series of solid pitching performances in their first games of the 2012 season were not enough to get Pacific past a Hawaii Hilo team playing their fifth an sixth games of the season Wednesday as the Vulans swept a baseball doubleheader from the Boxers at Wong Stadium.

The Vulcans rode a one-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to take game one by a 7-3 score.  In the nightcap, Jeremy Kaaukai scored the game's only run in the fourth inning as Hawaii Hilo completed the sweep with a 1-0 victory.

Pacific (0-2) received effective performances from all four pitchers as Head Coach Greg Bradley used pitch counts to preserve arms for the seven-game Hawaii trip.  Ace Rob Dittrick (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of work in the opener, while Jason Sawyer (So., Scappoose, Ore.) allowed one run on five hits in a complete-game performance in the seven-inning second game.

Nate Rasmussen (Sr., Sandy, Utah) led Pacific at the plate, knocking three hits in the opener.  Logan Moen (Jr., Brier, Wash.) registered two hits in the nightcap.

GAME 1 – HAWAII HILO 7, PACIFIC 3
Hawaii Hilo manufactured the game's first run against Dittrick in the second inning.  Steven Riddle opened the frame with a double down the left field line and then scored on a one-out single by Brad Fairweather.

After being allowed just two hits over the first five innings by starter Jordan Kumasaka, the Boxers got their offense going in the sixth.  Conor Clark (Jr., Tigard, Ore.) walked to open the inning, advanced to second on a balk and went to third on a wild pitch.  Rasmussen followed with a single to center field to score Clark.  Another wild pitch sent Rasmussen to second, which allowed Kevin Schwartz (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) to score him with a single up the middle.

The Vulcans prospered on reliever Mike McGuire (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) on the seventh to secure the win.  Austin Cusack and Greg Cleary each reached on singles and leadoff man Keenan Kaulau opened scoring with an infield single that score pinch-runner Travis Stancil.

John Abreu followed with a single off of the new pitcher, Rasmussen, that scored Cleary, but a misplay in the outfield also allowed Kaulau home.  The Vulcans also picked up the fourth run of the frame by way of error.

The Boxers converted a pair of errors in the top of the eighth into a run.  Jared Van Hoon (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) reached on an error with one out and scored when Mike Nagamine (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) reached on an error.

Kumasaka earned his first win of the season for the Vulcans, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.  Casey Bohlmann earned his second save of the save, allowing one unearned run on one hit in four innings.  McGuire took Pacific's first loss of the season by allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.  Abreu and Joshua Wong each had two hits for the Vulcans.

GAME 2- HAWAII HILO 1, PACIFIC 0
Hawaii Hilo's pitching gave Pacific little chance to get anything going in the seven-inning nightcap as Gaven Kinoshita and Jeremy Dela Cruz combined to allow just four hits in the game.  The Boxers had just two hits in the first six innings and found themselves unable to capitalize on two hits and two runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh.

The Vulcans picked up the only run of the game in the fourth inning thanks to an error.  Kaaukai singled to left field with one out and advanced to third on a walk and a fly out.  The Boxers appeared to be out of the inning when Fairweather hit into a ground ball, but an error by Rasmussen allowed Kaaukai to score.

Pacific positioned themselves well for a two-out rally in the seventh inning.  Moen started things with a one-out single through left side, but was erased when Jordan Siu (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) reached on a fielder's choice.  A subsequent walk allowed pinch-runner Grant Rogers (Fr., Clackamas, Ore.) to advanced to second.

Chad Fahey (Sr., Keizer, Ore.) followed with a single to left field.  Rogers was waved home, but the relay from the third baseman Abreu was in time to get the runner out at home and end the game.

Sawyer picked up the hard-luck loss for the Boxers in the complete-game effort, allowing one unearned run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Kinoshita picked up his first win of the season for Hawaii Hilo, allowing two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings.  Dela Cruz earned his first win of the season.

The two teams will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. (HST).
