NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Bridgewater College freshman Corey Armentrout pitched six innings of shutout relief to lead the Eagles to a 4-1 victory Saturday evening over Cortland State at War Memorial Stadium.

Cortland State took the lead with a run in the top of the third, but the Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Devon Snow and Jonathan Mason singled to put runners at the corners. Jay Thompson then grounded into a force play at second to score Snow with BC's first run. Thompson then scored all the way from first on a long hit-and-run single by Andrew Hacker to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles added single runs in the fourth and sixth. With two outs in the fourth, Brya Sanderson doubled and scored on a triple by Snow to make it 3-1. Alex Nuttycombe singled to open the sixth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Maher. After Darren Yoder walked, Nuttycombe scored on an error, giving BC a 4-1 lead.

Joseph Lucas started for the Eagles and pitched three innings, leaving after reaching his pitch limit for the day. Lucas allowed one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Armentrout went the rest of the way and allowed just two hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Earlier Saturday, the Eagles took a 13-1 victory over the Apprentice School.

Robert Gallet turned in his second strong start of the season. He worked seven innings and allowed seven hits and one run. He did not strike out a batter and walked just one.

Yoder hit a big day at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort. He scored three times and drove home two runs. Ryan Smith was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored while Sanderson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs.

The Bridgewater staff continued its dominant performances early in the season as it has allowed four earned runs in 47 innings for a 0.67 ERA

With the victories, the Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season.
