Millsaps Sweeps Classic with Blowout of Ozarks

More news about: Millsaps

Clarksville, Ark. – The Millsaps Majors Baseball Team wrapped up the Ozarks Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon as they dominated the home standing Ozarks Eagles, 11-4. The Majors used a five run sixth inning to pull away and rode the arm of junior Will Edwards (1-1) to sweep the weekend.

Both Edwards and Ozark's starter Freddy Prince started the game in a duel as both shut down the opposing team's offenses by allowing no runs and one hit.

Millsaps got things started in the top of the fourth as junior Wes Perkins led things off with a one out double to right center. Two straight walks loaded the bases and brought up freshman Samuel Doucet, who was hit by a pitch to score a run and put the Majors on top 1-0.

Senior Drew Respess then came to the plate and put the ball in play as the Eagles committed an error to put Millsaps on top 2-0.

The Majors got another run in the fifth as senior Jules Roussel smoked a triple to right field, his second of the season and the weekend. Perkins came up and came through with a RBI single up the middle.

Edwards continued to deal and mow down the Eagles in order as Millsaps took control in the top of the sixth.

Senior Andrew Evans led things off with a walk and found himself on third after two straight wild pitches. Doucet followed that up with a RBI single and found himself on third after two more wild pitches. This time, senior Drew Leonard came to the plate and singled home Doucet to put Millsaps up 5-0. Leonard moved to second on a wild pitch and then stole third outright with two outs in the inning.

Sophomore Stephen Gates answered with a double down the line to add another run to the board. After Roussel was hit by a pitch, Perkins came to the plate and roped a two RBI double to right field to make it 8-0 Millsaps.

The Eagles finally got a run across in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an error, but it would not be enough as Millsaps added three more in the seventh thanks to a two RBI single from Leonard.

Despite the Majors leading 11-1 after seven inning, the 10-run rule was not in effect. The Ozarks plated three runs in the eighth and ninth, but it would not be enough.

Edwards was terrific for Millsaps as he went seven innings while giving up no earned runs (one unearned) off five hits while striking out six to pick up his first win in a Major uniform. Prince took the loss for the Ozarks.

Perkins led the way offensively going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs while Leonard added a 2-for-5 day with three RBIs. Doucet picked up another multiple hit game, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Respess was 2-for-4 with a RBI on the day.

The Majors are now 5-1 on the young season. During the classic, Millsaps put 31 runs on the board in only three games.

Millsaps has a quick turnaround as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama on Tuesday to take on the Huntingdon Hawks. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
