Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead, but the Cru gave up five runs over the last four innings and fell to Trinity 5-3 in non-conference action Tuesday night in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 3-3 on the year. The Tigers improve to 10-1 on the season with victory.
The Cru took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Chris Florack walked, stole second and third and scored on Seth Mogavero's single. Zach Young singled home Chris Joshlin in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-0 UMHB. Chance Ryan took a two-hitter into the top of the sixth before Nick Pappas led off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1. Trinity would grab a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on Dominick Robusto's RBI bunt single and a throwing error. A run-scoring wild pitch moved the Tiger lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth. Mogavero blasted a solo homer of his own leading off the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 4-3, but Will Donnan's RBI single gave Trinity some breathing room in the top of the ninth. Michael Bentz would strike out the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory.
Ryan struck out nine batters in six innings of three-hit pitching for the Cru. Taylor Burrow took the loss after giving up two runs in one inning of work. Mogavero had two of UMHB's five hits in the loss. Joshua Fink moved to 3-0 with seven innings of four-hit pitching for the Tigers. He struck out seven, walked three and gave up three earned runs. Bentz struck out five in two innings of one-hit relief for his second save of the year. Robusto was the only Trinity player with two hits in the game.
The Cru will return to action with a three-game series at East Texas Baptist this weekend. The two teams will play a 6:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
