St. Louis, Mo., February 26, 2012 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team was out-hit 37-23 as the Bears lost both games of a doubleheader against DePauw University on Sunday at Kelly Field. DePauw won the seven-inning first game 12-3 before slugging its way to a 22-9 win in game two.
Washington U. struck first in game one when sophomore Dylan Reid singled to center field and stole second before advancing to third on a balk. Sophomore Kyle Billig followed with a single to left field to drive in Reid and give the Bears a 1-0 lead after the first inning. DePauw answered with three unearned runs on one hit and one error in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead, before adding another run on two doubles in the top of the third to make it 4-1. The Tigers scored four more runs, including three unearned, in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Brian Cizek led off with a single, and freshman Andrew Goldstick drew a one-out walk. Billig hit a two-out, two-RBI single to bring the Bears within 8-3. DePauw scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 12-3. Sophomore Brendan Rooney was charged with the loss for the Bears, despite allowing just one earned run in four innings of work. The Bears out-hit DePauw 10-9 in game one, but were hurt by nine walks and four errors, which led to nine unearned runs for DePauw.
In game two, senior Brandon Rogalski scored on an inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the first inning for Washington U. Rogalski drove the ball over the charging DePauw center fielder's head and to the fence as he sprinted around the bases to put the Bears up 1-0. In the bottom of the second, freshman Chris Lowery was hit by a pitch to reach base, and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on a groundout to second by Cizek to give Washington U. a 2-0 lead.
The Bears added to their lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Billig reached on a fielder's choice before Reid and Rogalski drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Freshman Zack Kessinger reached on a fielder's choice that scored Billig. An errant throw on the play from the DePauw first baseman went into the outfield, allowing Reid to score and give the Bears a 4-0 lead. DePauw quickly erased the deficit, scoring four runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 4-4.
Washington U. regained the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning. Cizek hit a lead-off single and junior Matthew Polites followed with a double before Reid drove in Cizek on a groundout to second. DePauw answered with a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5, before taking a 9-5 lead with four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. The Bears cut the lead to two in the bottom of the inning when Rogalski hit a two-out, two-RBI double to make it 9-7. From there it was all DePauw as the Tigers broke the game open in the seventh inning. DePauw sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits, and added another run in the top of the eighth to take a 21-7 lead. The Bears scored two runs on four hits, including RBI singles by Kessinger and Lowery, to make it 21-9. DePauw scored a run on three hits in the ninth to make the final score 22-9. Junior Max Gordon took the loss for Washington U., allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings of work.
Washington U. (0-3) will try to pick up its first win of the season when the Bears host Greenville College in a 2 p.m. game at Kelly Field on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
