#4 CNU Beats Gallaudet at Home, 12-5

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (7-2) jumped all over Gallaudet University (0-5) with nine runs in the first two innings, cruising to a 12-5 win on Friday. Steven Lindemuth drove in five runs for the Captains to lead the attack.

CNU took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, getting hits out in four of their first six at-bats. Shannon Mark led off with a double and came around to score on a single by Billy Steel. After a single by Connor Madden to move him up, Steel scored on a groundout by Lindemuth. Another double from Luke Saunders scored Madden to finish out the first-inning scoring.

After Gallaudet picked up one in the top of the second, but CNU batted around in the bottom half, scoring six runs in the inning. Marcus Smith walked the bases loaded to start the inning, and after an RBI fielders choice by Madden, Lindemuth smacked a three-run double to clear the bags. In his second at-bat of the frame, rookie Preston Grissom picked up two RBI on a single up the middle to round out the big inning.

On the hill, Captains freshman starter Jordan Boze settled in and held the big lead. Boze gave up just three hits in five innings of work, striking out five as he picked up his second win on the year. Boze retired the last ten batters he faced.

A pair of rookies, Mike Simko and Kyle Goddard, closed out the win with four innings of relief. Goddard struck out four in two innings of work.

The Bison were led by Casey Hicks, going 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored. JJ Klein added a three-run double in the top of the ninth.

CNU got multi-hit games from six players, including a 3-3 performance from Saunders. The senior third baseman pounded a home run to left for the second straight game, and finished with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Lindemuth was 2-4 with five RBI and a run scored. Mark added a three-hit day, going 3-4 with two runs scored and a pair of walks.
