HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team earned a pair of wins in a home doubleheader sweep over Baruch College on March 3 at Dobbelaar Baseball Field, 4-0, 10-3. The Ducks are now 4-1 in the early season, which matches the best start for a Stevens baseball team since the 2004 campaign. Stevens recorded 15 hits in the double dip.

In the 4-0 opener, junior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) tossed a complete game five-hitter and struck out six for his first victory of the season. Poinsett faced just one of the minimum going into the seventh inning before surrendering two consecutive hits. He also did not allow a walk in the contest or an extra base hit.

Offensively, Stevens was led by senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) who went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Both of Kiczek's RBIs were part of a three-run first inning for the Ducks.

Although he did not record an official at bat, senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) drew three walks in Game 1 and scored two runs with a stolen base. Graduated student and infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) put together a 1-for-2 opener with a run scored and walk.

Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) drove in a run on a double in the fifth inning as part of a 1-for-2 opener. Allen also walked and scored a run. Senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) batted 1-for-3 with an RBI in Game 1.

In the nightcap, the Ducks used a six-run fifth inning to blow the game out of reach for the Bearcats and went onto win 10-3. Before that inning, the Ducks led 4-3, with all seven runs coming in the second and third innings between the two teams.

Sophomore infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) and freshman infielder Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) paced the Ducks at the plate. Donovan recorded a 2-for-2 second game with two RBI, two runs scored and a hit by pitch. Donovan also made a tremendous defensive play at third base that took extra bases away from a Baruch batter. Calleo drove in three runs and went 1-for-2 at the dish. He recorded a sacrifice fly to his credit.

Phillips batted 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in Game 2, while Glassman drove in two runs on a double, walked twice and swiped a bag.

Allen scored twice more and doubled in Game 2. Kiczek stolen a bas, was hit by a pitch, scored twice and drove in another as part of a 1-for-2 nightcap.

On the mound for the Ducks in Game 2, junior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) got the nod and earned his first win of the season after throwing five innings and scattering five hits. Courter also struck out three and allowed two earned runs.

After Courter, freshman Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw one inning out of the bullpen and struck out one batter before giving way to senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.). Vinci tossed the seventh inning and struck out the side.

Stevens will be back on the diamond on March 7, when it travels to William Paterson University to take on the Pioneers for a single game at 3 p.m.
