WINCHESTER, Va. - Senior Cory Nelson tossed a complete game seven-hitter as No. 22/RV Shenandoah University finished off a weekend sweep of its USA Southseries against Ferrum with a 4-0 victory.
Nelson (1-2) struck out nine and walked just one in tossing his first career complete game for SU (7-4, 3-1 USA South).
Junior Tyler Easterly (1-1) was nearly as good for Ferrum (9-5, 2-2), but was victimized by seven errors.
SU, which was held to just four hits on the day, scored three unearned runs off of those seven miscues.
The Hornets lone earned run came in the first as junior Kurt Krout doubled down the left field line, stole second and then scored on a Jake Pendergraft groundball.
Easterly, who registered two quick outs to start the second, saw his defense let him down against the bottom of the Shenandoah order before he could record the third out of the frame.
Dan Powers reached on an infield error before before Corbin Lucas singled to right and Mike Minch drew a walk.
Joey Donofrio then reached on a double error by FC second baseman Matt Reynolds, allowing both Powers and Lucas to score.
The final run came home as SU employed a steal-stop with Donofrio and Minch.
Nelson allowed four runners into scoring position over the remainder of the contest, but bailed himself out inning-ending strikeouts in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday at 3:30 in a non-league game against Dickinson.
