MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Edgewood College baseball team played a solid first game, but struggled in the second contest in dropping a season opening doubleheader to Hamline University late Friday night into Saturday morning. The Pipers topped the Eagles 5-3 in the first game, before jumping on Edgewood College 12-6 in the early morning nightcap.

In the first game, Edgewood College (0-2) held a 1-0 lead on a Brandon Bartles sacrifice fly, but Hamline answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Eric Curtis drove in the Eagles other two runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth, but the Pipers tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Starting pitcher Miles Mayer went the distance for the Eagles, striking out eight and not walking any.

The second game started just after midnight, but Hamline University (4-4) didn't need a wake-up call. The Pipers scored 12 times in the first three innings to put the game away early. The offense highlight for the Eagles with the first career home run for freshman Ben Jennings, a two-run blast in the fifth inning. Ryan O'Dell had two doubles for the Eagles and Jennings and Alex Jaskulski each had two hits. Ryan Walker also had a triple.
