B-W Baseball Team Beats Bluffton, 17-5, on Second Day of Spring Trip to Florida

 

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Bluffton University, 17-5, today (Sunday, March 4, 2012) on the second day of its Annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Yellow Jackets have won five straight games.

With its win, B-W is now 5-1 overall. With its loss, Bluffton is now 1-3 overall.


The Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning before B-W scored once in its half of the frame to make it a 2-1 game. Bluffton gained a 3-1 advantage with a run in the third inning, but B-W exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. After Bluffton made it 8-5 with a tally in the top of the fifth, B-W increased its distance by scoring four more times in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 13-4 lead. The Beavers scored their final run in the top of the seventh and B-W closed out its scoring with one in the seventh and three more in the eighth.


B-W outhit Bluffton, 16-10. Freshman outfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./ Riverview) led the way by going three-for-three with a run scored. In addition, senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) was two-for-five with two doubles and junior third baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) was two-for-four with a walk, two runs scored and a run batted-in.


On the mound, junior David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) started, pitched the first five innings and evened his record at 1-1 this season. He allowed eight hits, four runs (all earned), struck out five and walked two. He was followed by sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) who pitched two innings, allowed two hits, one run (earned), struck out two and walked one. In addition, senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) pitched the eighth inning and junior Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) the ninth frame. Each pitched did not allow a hit or run, struck out two and walked one.


B-W returns to action tomorrow when it plays Bluffton College in a single, nine-inning game at 6:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing eight varsity and four junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
