WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Bridgewater College junior outfielder Jonathan Mason belted a three-run homer and drove in four runs Monday to lead the Eagles to an 8-4 victory over No. 21 Thomas More.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 10-3 on the season. Bridgewater is now 3-0 against teams ranked in the Top 25.
The Eagles scored in the second on a single by Darren Yoder to lead 1-0, but the Saints took advantage of two BC errors to lead 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Bryan Sanderson led off the sixth with a single for the Eagles and Jay Thompson followed with a single to put two runners on. A single by Andrew Hacker plated Sanderson and a double by Mason scored Thompson, tying the score at 3-3. Pinch-hitter Matt Maher then reached on an infield hit that scored Hacker, giving the Eagles a 4-3 lead.
The Eagles added some cushion with four runs in the seventh. With two outs and no one on base, Sanderson and Thompson drew back-to-back walks. Sanderson scored on a single by Hacker and Mason followed with a three-run homer to give the Eagles an 8-3 lead.
Freshman lefty Corey Armentrout improved to 3-1 on the season with six solid innings. He allowed three runs, just one earned, on five hits. Armentrout struck out five and walked three.
Mark Smith pitched a scoreless seventh and Kevin Chandler worked the final two frames, allowing one run on three hits.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday with a twinbill against Husson University. The first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
