CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Senior pitcher Bradley Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) hurled his second career complete game with a career-high six strikeouts in the opener as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team split a doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at V.A. Memorial Field.
The Spartans (6-2 overall) defeated the Battling Bishops 6-1 in game one, but fell a count of 7-3 in the weekend finale. Case is now idle until the University Athletic Association Championship in Sanford, Florida from March 11-18.
In game one, the Spartans scored two in the second inning and four more in the third, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore right fielder Jordan Dague (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and senior second baseman Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush).
For the game, Marko, junior centerfielder Paul Pakan (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) and freshman third baseman Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) each recorded two hits while Marko drove in two runs.
On the mound, Potter allowed just a lone ninth-inning run on just six Ohio Wesleyan base knocks with six strikeouts and no walks. The Spartan defensive unit aided Potter, turning three double plays.
In the nightcap, the Battling Bishops tallied five runs in the second inning and one more in the third, and the Spartans weren't able to mount a comeback.
Junior first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) was 3-for-4 with a double. Freshman second baseman Kerrigan Cain (Hartville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) posted two hits in four at-bats with a run scored, while senior Sam Alexander (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) ripped his second homerun of the season, giving him eight for his career, in the top of the sixth inning.
Freshman pitcher Kevin Johnstone (Placentia, Calif./Valencia) started on the mound, but lasted only 1.1 innings in the losing effort. Freshman Edward Abramson (Maitland, Fla./Winter Park) was effective in long relief, throwing four innings and allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
