Old Westbury, N.Y. (3/8/12) – Senior D.J. Breckenridge was 3-for-5 with a double in his first game of the season as the #2/3 Kean University baseball team topped host SUNY College at Old Westbury, 5-3, in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars (7-2) opened the tenth with senior Steve Sanguiliano drawing a leadoff walk followed by sophomore Joe O'Connor being hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a double steal that set up Dylan Laguna's single up the middle, scoring Sanguiliano and breaking a 1-1 tie. Two batters later, junior Nick Ramagli lofted a sacrifice fly to that scored O'Connor, giving Kean a 3-1 advantage. Laguna would later score on a throwing error and sophomore Nick Zucchero crossed the plate on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead. Old Westbury answered with two runs in the bottom of the tenth but were unable to overcome Kean's four spot in the top of the frame. Paul Valerio and Brian Reutter opened with back-to-back singles and Anthony Orsano drew a walk to load the bases. John Angelino was hit by the pitch to score Valerio and a balk advanced the runners, scoring Reutter, edging the Panthers closer at 5-3. Sanguiliano then moved to the mound and shut down the next two batters he faced to record his first save of the season.
Kean struck first in their half of the third with a single by Sanguiliano, scoring sophomore Tyler Smarslok. The Panthers (5-3) answered right back in the bottom of the third with an RBI single up the middle by Orsano to knot the game at 1-1.
Offensively senior Eddie Jennings was 2-for-3 with two walks while Ramagli was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Starter Mike Russo tossed three innings in a predetermined rotation before southpaw Ryan Zamorsky worked the next 5.2 scoreless frames, scattering eight hits. Senior Chris Cirlincione recorded two outs to pick up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season.
