Emory University freshman Connor Dillman set a University Athletic Association (UAA) record with 13 strikeouts, and recorded the first nine-inning complete game shutout by an Eagle in almost nine years, leading the team to a 6-0 win over Brandeis University in Sunday's conference opener.

Dillman allowed just five hits and one walk over his nine innings on the mound, matching Case Western Reserve's Dan Ruef's record of 13 strikeouts in a UAA game, set in 2004, and the third-most in a game in school history.  The complete-game, nine-inning shutout was the first by an Emory pitcher since Reed Harvey recorded one against Piedmont College on April 13, 2003.

The game was a scoreless deadlock until the fifth, when Emory broke through with two in the frame, as freshman Brett Lake scored on a throwing error, and senior Jay Page drove in sophomore Brandon Hannon with a single.

Sophomore catcher Jared Welch extended the Eagles lead in the sixth with a two-out, two run double, scoring freshman Wes Peacock and Hannon.  Welch added two more for Emory in the bottom of the eighth with his first career home run.

Meanwhile, Dillman locked down Brandeis on the mound, striking out two batters in each of the first, third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.  He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced in the game, and allowed just three hits over the last six innings.

Dillman improved to a team-best 4-1 on the season, lowering his ERA to 2.17 with the effort.  Starter Pat Nicholson took the loss for the Judges, falling to 0-1 on the campaign.

Welch finished the game two-for-four at the plate with four runs batted in, while Page added a three-for-five performance, raising his batting average to .294.

Emory is now 8-6 on the season with a 1-0 record in UAA play, while Brandeis dropped to .500 with a 4-4 season ledger, including an 0-1 mark in Association action.

The Eagles will resume UAA play with a doubleheader on Monday, facing Case Western Reserve at 2:30 PM and Rochester at 6:00 PM.
