#3 Captains Win Ninth Game in 12 Days; Beat Albertus Magnus, 10-4

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains won their ninth game in the last 12 days, surging past Albertus Magnus (0-2) in a 10-4 final. CNU improves to 14-3 overall after going 9-1 in the last ten games.

CNU sophomore starter Jacob Vaughan was nearly unhittable in the early going, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He pitched seven strong innings giving up just two earned runs on four hits. He struck out five as he earned his second win of the season.

CNU picked up one run each in the second and third innings, followed by a four-run surge in the fourth to open up a 6-0 lead. In the fourth, designated hitter Chris McDougal singled to lead off the inning and moved up to second on a base-hit bunt by freshman Preston Grissom. Connor Madden loaded the bases with a single to left field, setting up a two-RBI double by Matt Shoemaker. The Captains scored two more on a single by Luke Saunders, plating Shoemaker and Billy Steel.

Albertus Magnus picked up two on a home run by Malcom Mendez in the sixth inning, but CNU tacked on two more in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-3 lead.

CNU reliever James Walsh pitched the eighth inning, giving up one run and striking out one. Matt Verdillo came in the ninth and struck out the side to close out the win.

The top four batters in the CNU lineup had two hits apiece, driving in at least one run and scoring once. McDougal added a 3-3 performance with a run scored and Steven Keener was 2-4 with three runs scored.

Daniel Kmiechick picked up the loss for the Falcons, giving up eight earned in five innings of work.

CNU heads back out on the road for four straight, starting with a 3:00 pm first pitch on Thursday, March 15 at 3:00 pm.
