Emory University freshman Michael Byman earned his first collegiate win with a five-inning relief effort, helping the Eagles come-from-behind to defeat Brandeis University 11-7 on Tuesday at the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Sanford, FL.

The contest was a seesaw affair between the two squads, with the Eagles jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the game, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first and second innings, and another in the fourth.

The game took a turn in the fifth inning, as Emory starter Matt McMahon got into trouble, loading the bases with nobody out and giving up a grand slam to Brandeis' Zach Malis.  McMahon allowed one more hit before leaving the game for Byman.

Byman would allow two more runs to score in the inning, giving the Judges a 6-5 lead after five innings.  However, he would settle in after that, retiring the next seven batters in a row.

Emory would begin its comeback with one out in the top of the seventh, as junior Daniel Iturrey drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single from senior Kevin O'Connor.  Sophomores Ryan Toscano and Josh Bokor each followed with singles of their own, the latter scoring O'Connor, and a bunt from junior Mark Lindemann brought a third run across in the inning.  Emory capped off the frame with an RBI double from freshman Brett Lake, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Brandon Hannon.

Brandeis cut the lead to three with a run off Byman in the eighth, but the Eagles made it an 11-7 in the ninth when Bokor scored on a double play.

Byman would close the game out in the ninth inning, finishing the contest with two runs allowed on five hits over five innings pitched, striking out two and not walking a batter.  He improved to 1-0 on the season, while Jesse Link took the loss for Brandeis, dropping to 0-1.

Toscano and Bokor each finished the game with two hits and three runs apiece, while Lindemann added a two-for-three performance with two RBIs.  Lake stole his 16th base of the season and eighth of the UAA Tournament during the game, and is one shy of the record for stolen bases in tournament history.

Emory now stands at 11-6 on the season with the win, the squad's fourth-straight.  Brandeis dropped to 4-7 with the loss.

The win by Emory sets up a key matchup at the tournament tomorrow, when the Eagles, 4-0 in UAA play, will face 3-0 Washington University (Mo), currently on a 10-game winning streak.  First pitch for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 2:30 PM at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.
