Sanford, Fla., March 13, 2012 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team took advantage of an error on a pickoff attempt that allowed sophomore Dylan Reid to score the game-winning run for the Bears in the bottom of the 10th inning of a 3-2 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament Championship.

Reid hit a one-out single through the left side of the infield to get on base in the 10th. He then stole his team-leading 16th base of the season to move into scoring position. Case Western Reserve pitcher Kevin Johnstone then tried to pick-off Reid at second base, but his throw went into center field and Reid sprinted home to score the game-winning run for Washington U.

Case Western Reserve held the Washington U. offense in check throughout the game, and the Spartans got a pair of hits to score the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. The Bears looked poised to answer in the bottom of the inning when senior Brandon Rogalski hit a lead-off double down the left-field line and sophomore Andrew Dwoskin reached first after being hit by a pitch, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the threat for Washington U.

The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh, when their lead-off batter singled and came around to score on a two-out single. Washington U. got on the board in the bottom of the inning when junior Matthew Polites and Freshman Noah Doppelt were both hit by pitches. Polites stole third and a sacrifice fly by freshman Andrew Goldstick made it 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Reid hit a lead-off single to center field, and advanced to second on an error on the play. Reid advanced to third on a groundout by Rogalski, before a wild pitch allowed Reid to score the tying run. Case Western Reserve got two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but a fly ball to center field ended the inning.

Rogalski came in to pitch in the 10th inning to earn his first win of the season. He recorded one strikeout and gave up one hit in the win. Sophomore Matt Kenahan recorded a season-high six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, while allowing two earned runs on seven hits in his second start of the season. Freshman Max Zhang pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits, while striking out two. He has now pitched 9 2/3 scoreless innings in five appearances for the Bears this season.

Washington U. was limited to a season-low four hits in the game, but took advantage of two errors by Case Western Reserve to score two unearned runs. The Spartans finished with 11 hits in the game.

The Bears (10-3, 3-0 UAA) are scheduled to play two games on Wednesday at the UAA Championship. Washington U. will face Emory University at 2:30 p.m. (ET), before squaring off against Brandeis University at 6 p.m. (ET) in Sanford, Fla.

Bear Notebook: Washington University has now won 10-straight games, marking the longest winning streak since the 2006 season (13) … The Bears were 0-for-11 at the plate with runners on base in the game … With his double in the bottom of the fourth inning, Rogalski moved into a tie for sixth on Washington U.'s all-time career doubles list (35) … Reid's stolen base in the 10th inning made him 16-of-16 in stolen bases this season … Sophomore Kyle Billig singled in the top of the first inning to extend his hitting streak to six games.
