GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy won its sixth-straight game in an 11-3 non-league win over Haverford in the Griffins' home opener on Wednesday.

Senior Kevin Smeraglio and junior Brian Susten each had three hits apiece and two runs scored. Smeraglio also swiped three bases as well as the Griffins (7-3) scored nine unanswered runs to down the Fords.

Sophomore Dante Cassano drove in three RBI's on a pair of doubles. Senior Josh Martin knocked in three as well, but did so without recording a hit.

Sophomore Andrew Schaefer improved to 2-0 on the season allowing just two earned run over six innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

Haverford jumped on Schaefer in the first, scoring two runs on four hits and an error, but the Griffins countered with a two-spot in the bottom of the frame. Smeraglio, who led off the inning with a walk, stole second and would move to third on a groundout. He would score as Martin hit a ball to short, but the throw was in the dirt for the error. Martin would later score on one of Cassano's RBI doubles.

After the Fords plated a run in the second, a sac fly from sophomore Josh Van Horn in the third knotted it back up at 3-3.

Martin added an RBI groundout in the fourth for a 4-3 lead. Cassano then tacked on a big two-out, two-run double in the sixth. Susten would lead off the seventh by hitting his second homer of the year helping the Griffins on their way to the win.

Haverford starter Bryan Henrick suffered the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with five walks. Offensively, Nick Miranda went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Fords (6-5).

Sophomore John Burns reached base on five walks on the day, one short of tying an NCAA Division III record.
