PANTHER BASEBALL SHUTS DOWN STATEN ISLAND, EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SEVEN

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team extended their win streak to a season best six games on Wednesday after shutting out the visiting Staten Island Dolphins, 7-0, in non-conference action from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The win improves Old Westbury to 11-3 while sending the Dolphins to 6-5 on the season. 

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the fourth inning when Brian Reutter led off with a single, stole second and third before Anthony Orsano's single up the middle scored him for the eventual game-winner.  Three batters later, Christopher DeGennaro singled to drive in Orsano and John Angelino to extend his hit streak to 10 games.  Old Westbury tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth and solo runs in the seventh and eighth frames to earn the victory.    

Brian Reutter (2-4, R, 2-SB) and Anthony Orsano (2-4, 2-R, RBI) led the way for Old Westbury with multiple hits while John Angelino (2-4, RBI) scored twice and stole a pair of bags.  Christophe DeGennaro drove in a team-best three runs and Paul Valerio (1-4, R, SB) led off the seventh with a single to extend his hit streak to 14 games.  Frank Smith, Frances Torres and Joseph Innocente registered Staten Island's lone singles on the day.

Tim Walsh (2-1) posted another strong start for Old Westbury, working seven innings of two hit ball, walking one while striking out five.  Stephen Chapter gave up his first hit of the season with a two out single in the seventh, to end his streak of seven hitless innings of relief.  Chapter struck out three in the eighth and J.C. Costa fanned one to close out the ninth.  Staten Island starter Mike Gillen (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on seven hits over four innings.  

Old Westbury held a 12-3 advantage in hits, including 2-0 in extra base hits and 7-1 in stolen bases.  Staten Island committed five errors compared to Old Westbury's one.  Old Westbury tallied nine strikeouts with one walk, while Staten Island registered five strikeouts and two walks.
