Sophomore RHP Steve Maher improved to 4-0 on the season as he tossed a four-hit shutout in the No. 23-ranked Tommies' Sunday doubleheader split with No. 5-ranked UW-Stevens Point in Auburndale, Fla.
UST won the opener 3-0 but a four-run final inning lifted the Pointers to a 4-1 victory in game two.
Catcher J.D. Dorgan had a two-run single and picked a runner off first base to lead the Tommies (8-3). Maher stranded two runners at third base in the early going and retired 11 of the last 12 he faced. He struck out seven with no walks.
Maher's first four college games have produced wins over UW-Oshkosh and nationally-ranked St. Scholastica, UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point. In 25.1 innings he has 25 strikeouts and just two walks with a 0.71 ERA.
In game two, St. Thomas was one out away from a sweep, leading 1-0 with two out and a runner at first in the top of the seventh. A single and a hit batter loaded the bases, and a full-count walk tied the game 1-1. Casey Barnes followed with a three-run triple on a sinking liner for the lone RBI hit of the day for the Pointers (4-1).
UST loaded the bases after two were out in the bottom of the seventh to bring the winning run to the plate. But a fly out to deep right ended the game.
Point pitchers Cam Seidl and Ryan Iverson combined to allow one run on five hits in the victory. UST starter Bryce Gapinski pitched into the sixth inning and allowed no runs and four hits.
