AUBURNDALE, FL-Western New England scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 14-1,  at the Russ Matt Baseball Invitational  at Lake Myrtle Field #3 Sunday.

UMass Dartmouth got their only run in the fourth inning on a run-scoring double by freshman third baseman Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd). Sophomore second baseman Bedward Ortiz (La Vega, DR/Doherty HS) had a couple of hits for the Corsairs. Freshman right-hander Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) started and took the loss for UMD.

"We gave up seven in the first inning and we never really recovered from that," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We made several errors and they took advantage of them, and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities when we had runners in scoring position. They took advantage of every mistake we made. With a young team, things like this will happen. It's a matter of how we come back tomorrow."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 3-1 with the defeat, while Western New England improved to-0 with the defeat.  The Corsairs will return to action when they meet Western New England in Winter Haven, FL Sunday.
