CINCINNATI, Ohio – Franklin College topped Mount St. Joseph 5-1 in a single nine-inning baseball contest today and took the weekend series 2-1 at Marge Schott Stadium at University of Cincinnati.
The Grizzlies improved to 2-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 14-3 overall while the host Lions dropped to 1-2 in the league and 7-8.
FC freshman pitcher Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) earned the victory, improving to 2-1.
After Mount St. Joseph took a 1-0 in its first at-bat, Franklin tied it in the fourth inning when sophomore center fielder Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) hit a triple and then scored on a groundout by junior shortstop Nick Stoia (Camby, Ind./Decatur Central).
The Grizzlies broke the 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when freshman second baseman Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./H.S.) grounded out to bring in junior third baseman Jordon Klinedinst (Lebanon, Ind./H.S.), who doubled earlier in the frame.
Franklin got not one, but three insurance runs in the ninth when Stoia drew a walk with the bases loaded and junior catcher Jesse Wilson (Seymour, Ind./H.S.) singled in a pair of base runners.
Wilson's hit was one of eight for FC on the afternoon.
Powers worked 4-1/3 innings of middle relief, allowing just one hit, walking four batters and striking out five Lions.
Freshman Ryan Kendall (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) closed out the ballgame, working the last 2-2/3 innings – allowing neither a hit nor a run – to earn his first save.
