Saints Drop Series Opener to Grove City, 16-11

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team fell, 16-11, to Grove City College today (Friday, March 30, 2012) in the opening game of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) three-game series at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the PAC.  With the win, the Wolverines improve to 4-14 and 2-4 in the PAC.

Grove City scored eight in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth and held Thomas More to one in the second, one in the fourth, five in the sixth, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth for the 16-11 victory.

The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore second baseman Tyler Graber (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder), who was four-for-five with two doubles, a run batted-in and two runs scored and junior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), who was four-for-six with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.  Four other Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was three-for-five with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, sophomore center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-four with two doubles, a RBI and two runs scored, senior first baseman Andrew Thole (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-four with a double, a RBI and a run scored and sophomore third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was two-for-six with a RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, junior Grant Lewis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) suffered the loss as he started and pitched two innings giving up eight runs (all earned) on eight hits.  Freshman Ethan Fleming (Heath, Ohio/Heath) pitched four innings of relief and gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out four and freshman Tyler Jones (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) pitched three innings of relief and gave up two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out two.

Thomas More and Grove City will close out the series tomorrow (Saturday, March 31) with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Thomas More Field.
