Sophomore RHP Steve Maher shut down Hamline on three hits as No. 13-ranked St. Thomas made three first-inning runs stand up in Saturday night's 3-1 victory over the Pipers at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Game two of the twinbill will start at 9:20 p.m.

Jack Hogan's two-out, two-run single capped a three-run first inning for UST. Two Piper relievers held the Tommies scoreless over the next six innings.

Maher, who has won all six starts this season, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. A two-out wild pitch scored Hamline's only run in the fifth inning.

The Pipers put runners at first and third with two out in the seventh inning, but Maher got Jordan Rubbelke to fly out to end the game.

Maher, who struck out nine, now has a 1.14 ERA in 39.1 innings this season.
