EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater baseball team endured a long bus ride and two rain delays Saturday to sweep an ODAC doubleheader at Emory & Henry.
In the opener, the Eagles wiped out a 4-3 deficit with a nine-run seventh inning to defeat the Wasps. In Game 2, Robert Gallet pitched a complete-game, four-hitter to lead BC to a 12-1 win in a contest stopped after seven innings.
Emory & Henry scored two run off Eagles starter Kevin Chandler in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead in Saturday's opener.
A sacrifice fly by Alex Nuttycombe put the Eagles on the board in the fourth, but the Wasps tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 4-1.
BC made it a one-run game with a pair of runs in the seventh. Devon Snow led off with a single and scored on a triple by Derrik Walling, making the score 4-2. Walling scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Sanderson to pull the Eagles to within one, 4-3.
The Eagles sent 14 men to the plate in the seventh inning to take a 12-4 lead.
Zach Hynes led off with a double and Jay Thompson reached on an error. Darren Yoder singled to load the bases and Snow followed with a single to tie the score at 4-4. Walling was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run and Andrew Hacker walked to force home another run for a 6-4 Eagles lead. A single by Nuttycombe and a sacrifice fly by Mason plated runs before a single by Hynes chased home two runners to give the Eagles a 1-4 lead. After a single by Jay Thompson, Yoder singled home two more runs to put the Eagles on top, 12-4.
The Wasps made things interesting with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Two runs scored on an infield error and Josh McMillian drove home two more as E&H close the gap to 12-8.
Bridgewater answered with four runs in the top of the ninth to regain its eight-run lead.
Hynes led off the ninth with a homer, just before play was suspended for the first time. Play resumed with one out and Yoder on first base. Yoder stole second and scored on a single by Snow, making the score 14-8. Walling then hit his first career homer, a two-run shot to right, giving the Eagles a 16-8 lead.
Chandler pitched seven innings to earn the win as he improved to 6-0 on the year. He allowed eight runs, six earned, on eight hits. He struck out three and walked four.
Snow led an 18-hit attack with a 5-for-6 effort at the plate. He scored three times and drove home two runs. Walling was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and Nuttycombe was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in. Haynes was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs and Yoder finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in.
The Eagles added 15 more hits in the second game and that was more than enough for Gallet. The sophomore righthander allowed one run in seven innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Gallet lost his shutout in the sixth, but by that time the Eagles were on top 12-0.
The Eagles scored in the first on a single by Hacker and then added another run in the third when Snow doubled, scoring Yoder who led off the inning with a single.
BC added three runs in the fourth and three more in the fourth to take control of the game.
Jonathan Mason led off the third inning with a single and Hynes followed with a homer, making the score 4-0. Thompson singled and moved to second when Snow reached on an error. Walling then singled to right, scoring Thompson to make it 5-0.
Hacker led off the fifth with a double and scored on a double by Nuttycombe for a 6-0 lead. Nuttycombe scored on a triple by Hynes and Hynes trotted home on Thompson's single, making the score 8-0.
The offense continued to roll with four more runs in the sixth. Hacker led off the inning with a homer and a triple by Thompson plated two more runs. Thompson scored on a groundout by Yoder to complete BC's scoring.
Hacker and Thompson had three hits apiece to lead the Eagles offense in Game 2. Thompson drove home three runs and Hacker finished with two RBIs. Walling and Hynes each finished with two hits and Hynes drove in three runs.
The Eagles are 20-8 overall and 7-2 in the ODAC. E&H is 8-18 overall and 6-6 in the ODAC.
Bridgewater is back in action Monday afternoon when the Eagles host Washington and Lee. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
