BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Aram Mulhern's (Taunton, Mass.) two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled Massachusetts Maritime to an 8-3 non-league college baseball victory over Emerson Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The host Buccaneers (8-6) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) reached on an infield single and later scored on senior Billy Shouldice's (Rutland, Vt.) sacrifice fly, but the visiting Lions (5-14) evened matters in the fifth when senior Adam Speakman (Barrington, R.I.) drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior Ryan Garber (Holmdel, N.J.). Mulhern then delivered the tie-breaking three-bagger that plated Shouldice and junior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) with the go-ahead runs before scoring on an infield single by junior Zach Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) for a 4-1 Massachusetts Maritime advantage heading into the late innings.
Emerson loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh on a double by freshman Zach Dean (Vero Beach, Fla.) that was followed by bases loaded walks to Speakman and sophomore James Sullivan (Medfield, Mass.), but Buccaneer freshman Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) ended the threat by picking Sullivan off first. The hosts then took advantage of four Lion errors and Shouldice's second sacrifice fly of the day in the bottom the frame to extend their lead to 8-1, as Emerson tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore Cal Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass.) and Dean's sacrifice fly to account for the final score.
Rosano collected two of Massachusetts Maritime's seven hits on the afternoon, as junior Hunter Horton (Wareham, Mass.) added a double while Shouldice and Cooney chipped in with singles. Sophomore Chris Gallagher (East Sandwich, Mass.) picked up his second victory in three decisions on the spring with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, as Cooney earned his fourth save by escaping the seventh inning bases-loaded jam and recording the final seven outs. Freshman Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) allowed a run and three hits over the first five innings for the hosts, who have won seven of their last 11 contests since March 17th.
Garber, Ciarcia and senior Peter Maltzan (Lexington, Mass.) each rapped out two hits as part of an eight-hit effort for Emerson, as sophomore Nick Kelly (McLean, Va.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Lions in allowing four earned runs and fanning four over 6 1/3 innings to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to East Providence, R.I. on Thursday afternoon to take on Johnson & Wales in a non-league outing that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Emerson heads to Quincy, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Eastern Nazarene in a non-league doubleheader that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
